Blue Eagles complete double over Mwatate in Style.
Soy United registered a commanding 2-0 victory over Mwatate United to secure their second away win of the season in an FKF National Super League Round 27 clash at Dawson Mwanyumba Stadium in Wundanyi, Taita Taveta County.
The match kicked off at a lively tempo, with both sides showing attacking intent early on. In the 9th minute, Soy United winger Peter Okello sparked a counterattack and delivered a dangerous cross into the box, but it failed to find a teammate. Shortly after, Erick Namasaka weaved past defenders and attempted a shot from inside the area, but his effort drifted wide.
Mwatate responded moments later with a counterattack of their own, only for defender Jephtha Okiring to clear the danger decisively. In the 18th minute, Joseph Wafula threaded a precise pass to Alfred Ratolo, whose strike was punched away by the goalkeeper. The keeper went down injured in the process, causing a brief stoppage before eventually being substituted in the 28th minute.
The hosts nearly broke the deadlock in the 34th minute from a free kick near the box, but goalkeeper Robert Omuse reacted sharply to punch the ball away for a corner, which came to nothing.
Soy United found their breakthrough in the 37th minute. Stand-in captain Wattstak Mutsami rose highest to head home from a well-delivered Elvis Shamala free kick, giving the visitors a deserved lead. Deep into first-half stoppage time, Namasaka turned provider again, releasing Ratolo who calmly slotted home to double the advantage and send Soy United into the break with a 2-0 cushion.
After the restart, Mwatate piled on pressure in search of a comeback, but Soy United remained organized and composed. Namasaka continued to influence proceedings, setting up Okello on the flank, though his effort sailed over the bar.
In the 63rd minute, head coach Jeffers Odongo made tactical changes, introducing Tanzanian forward Mohammed Wangai for Evans Maliachi to freshen up the attack. Mwatate later came close to scoring when a shot beat Omuse but struck the post, only for Shamala to react quickly and clear the ball off the line.
Odongo further reinforced his side with substitutions, bringing on Harryson Lutta, Erick Masafu, and Kevin Odira to help absorb pressure and see out the game. The changes proved effective as Soy United maintained control to secure all three points.
The victory not only marked Soy United’s second away win of the campaign but also completed a league double over Mwatate, following their 1-0 win in Eldoret earlier in January.
The Blue Eagles climb to 9th place in the National Super League standings and will look to build momentum when they host Nzoia Sugar on Sunday 12th. Meanwhile, Mwatate United turn their attention to an away fixture in Nairobi against FC Talanta.
