Stoppage-time Setback Ends Soy's Seven-game Unbeaten Run.
The Blue Eagles’ seven-game unbeaten streak came to an end on Saturday afternoon after suffering a narrow 1-0 defeat to Kibera Blackstars at Gems Cambridge, Karen in a National Super League round 20 encounter.
The contest burst into life from the opening whistle, with both sides showing high intensity and urgency. In the 10th minute, defensive midfielder Wattstak Mutsami was booked following a challenge on winger Jephtha Bundi. The resulting free kick, taken by Wellington Ochieng’, drifted wide of the target.
Soy grew into the game as Peter Okello won possession in midfield before releasing new signing Bancy Ivayo, who cut through the defence only to be denied by goalkeeper Evans Omondi. Just before the interval, Erick Namasaka nearly broke the deadlock with a fierce long-range strike that sailed inches wide, leaving the scoreline level at the break.
The second half began with head coach Jeffers Odongo forced into an early change, as Bancy Ivayo was withdrawn after picking up a knock, paving the way for Victor Maliachi Junior to make his debut. The tempo slowed, largely due to the scorching afternoon sun, prompting further tactical tweaks from both benches.
Soy made a double substitution in the 65th minute, introducing Evans Maliachi and Kevin Owidi in place of Peter Okello and Harryson Lutta. Ten minutes later, Joseph Wafula replaced Erick Namasaka, adding fresh legs in the attacking third.
A late surge from Soy saw Evans Maliachi fouled in a promising position, but Robinson Kamura’s resulting free kick failed to trouble the hosts. The decisive moment arrived deep into stoppage time when Donald Omwanda rose highest to power home a header from a corner delivered by Venon Nanjero, sealing victory for Kibera.
The win marked Kibera Blackstars’ first triumph over Soy since the 2020/21 season, having previously lost twice and drawn once in recent meetings.
Despite the result, the Blue Eagles delivered a spirited and disciplined performance, drawing positives ahead of their next fixture; a home clash against Naivas FC next Sunday.
Speaking post-match, the gaffer called for urgency and sharper finishing:
“It’s unfortunate we conceded late, but we must show urgency and improve our efficiency in front of goal as we prepare for Naivas at home.”
The encounter also saw five new signings named in the matchday squad, with four making their debuts — Bancy Ivayo, Victor Maliachi, Kevin Owidi, and Evans Maliachi — while goalkeeper Morgan Ambuka was named among the substitutes.
